Cincinnati Parks Foundation was lucky enough to have Ellen Sole as a board member, mentor and friend. A mother and preschool teacher, her love of life was filled with so many things, including parks and books. As a board member of Cincinnati Parks Foundation, Ellen introduced the idea of Family Fun Days, free, family-focused events that helped bring families and create community connections within our urban green spaces. Ellen was also a member of the Mercantile Library, an iconic Cincinnati gathering space for readers and writers. In honor of Ellen’s memory and the impact that she had on the city of Cincinnati, our parks and greenspaces and countless children through her teaching and volunteering, we have created the Ellen Heart & Sole, a free book give away within Cincinnati Parks.

At Family Fun Days and certain free Cincinnati Park Advisory Council (CPAC) events, new, age-appropriate books will be distributed to children ages 12 and under thanks to a partnership with the Queen City Book Bank.

Our parks and green spaces serve as inspiring environments that encourage children’s interest in literature and reading. Through this program, we hope to positively influence kids’ reading habits and to continue to grow their connection with their neighborhood parks. This is just the beginning of this book program that highlights the connection of reading and nature.
