The foundation of the Foundation.

Thank you to all of our Board Members--former and current--who joined us last night at French Park for our first-ever Board Reunion. It was a wonderful evening to connect, reminisce, and plan for the future. We are grateful for our Board of Directors support for all we have accomplished and excited to continue working together for all that is to come.

@cincyparks
You’ve seen him on our feed. And if you ever stop to watch the activity on wheels at the Sawyer Point Rink, you’ve seen his talent in person. We thought it was time to hear from Will Osborne, the one man hype show for roller skating in Cincinnati, directly. Once a professional jam skater, Will is part of the fabric of the skating community, working to spread the word about skating and the outdoor, riverfront rink, to all. If you decide to try skating for the first time (or the first time in a long time), we can guarantee that Will will find you on the rink and give you an impromptu lesson. We’ve seen it happen. That’s the beauty of the skating community—welcoming and inclusive, thanks to Will, the Reckless Sk8ers, Cincy Socialights, Skate Downtown Cincy, and the hundreds of other skaters we’ve met who know that life is more fun on wheels. And that’s why we’re so excited to be helping bring back the Sawyer Point rink—the largest riverfront rink in the country!

Teamwork.

Thanks to students from Clark Montessori, Cincinnati Parks staff, and community members for their work planting new trees at Ault Park. A group of Ault Park neighbors donated new trees to the Park as part of our Memorial Tree & Bench program. Now, their memories of loved ones are something we can all enjoy as we watch them grow. Learn more about how you can commemorate a special memory or person with a tree or bench in your favorite Cincinnati Park. #linkinbio

Who’s to say that a “facie” can’t be the furry kind. We’re bringing you our first #fridayfacie in our six week challenge in Eden Park. We’re honoring the memory of our dear friend and former Board Member, Ellen Sole, by challenging you to visit as many Cincinnati Parks as possible over the next six weeks. Don’t forget to take a #facie — then tag @cincyparksfoundation and #cincyparksfacie

Were proud to announce the 17th annual Hats Off Luncheon details. Save the date for Friday, October 6, 2023, at the John G. and Phyllis W. Smale Riverfront Park. And hold on to your hats when you hear about the lineup of superstars working to make this years marquis event the best. Thank you to our honorary co-chairs, Michael Betz, and Rhiannon Hoeweler. It’s International Women’s Day and we’re here to celebrate the many women who have joined us to make our Cincinnati Parks among the best in the nation. From our Board of Directors, to our Women’s Committee, to Parks staff, City of Cincinnati leaders, our volunteers and our team, these women are making a difference for everyone!
Some great kids found a fun om in Cincinnati Parks, thanks to our latest be.well program. This award-winning wellness program, through Cincinnati Childrens Physical and Occupational Therapy department, gives their patients the opportunity to experience different sports and activities while achieving fitness goals. We cant think of a better place for these kids to gather than Cincinnati Parks! Over the past few weeks, these young yogis met at Avon Woods Nature Center for a storytime-inspired yoga class that focused on fun and flexibility. To celebrate the end of the program, the class met at Anderson Pavilion for one last class and a carousel ride at Carol Anns Carousel. Yogatta love that!

If youve been following along with the story of the Capitoline Wolf, youll want to listen to a recent interview with our Executive Director, Jennifer Hafner-Spieser and Tana Weingartner on WXVU. There are over 100 replicas of this same statue throughout the world, so the wolf statue is being produced from original plaster casts in Florence, Italy. Thanks to our work with the members of the Sons and Daughters of Italy Cincinnatus Lodge #1191, the new statue should make a return later this summer. New signage around the statue will tell the story of the she-wolfs history and how she came to reside in Eden Park.

Listen to the piece #linkinbio and follow along to be among the first to know when the new statue will be dedicated in Eden Park.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and Cincinnati Parks Foundation former board member, Ellen Pease Sole.

Ellen was one of the most joyful individuals. A force of good. Witty and cool, and so very fun.

She was the founder and supporter of our beloved Smale Family Fun Days. She and her husband, Clark, donated the Trigger Horse at Carol Ann’s Carousel at Smale Riverfront Park. Ellen was a huge advocate of our Ezzard Charles Project and absolutely LOVED Cincinnati Parks! A statue, created by her sister, Marjorie Pease Applegate, was dedicated in Ellens honor for her work in Cincinnati Parks in Ault Park in 2021. It was a thoughtful surprise arranged by her husband, Clark.

When Ellen served on our Programming Committee, she led the Board in a selfie challenge, where Board members were charged with getting out to as many Cincinnati Parks as possible within the year to take a selfie to document their visit. Ellen renamed selfie to facie--a term we have adopted within our organization and now are sharing it with you.

We are honoring Ellens joy and love of our parks by inviting you to join us on a facie challenge. Over the next six weeks, go visit as many Cincinnati Parks as you can. When you find the right space, take a “facie”. Tag us @cincyparksfoundation and use the hashtag #cincyparksfacie.

They say that joy is the sunshine you need on a cloudy day. So lets spread joy, like Ellen, all over our Parks.

@cincyparks
Roller skating is not just a hobby or a form of exercise. For many, it is a way of life that has been passed down from generation to generation. The Sawyer Point rink isn’t just for skaters, though. You can be a part of the positive outdoor energy just by watching, listening to the music, and soaking it all in. Keep following us for updates on the outdoor rink. Or on the next sunny day, stroll by the rink. We think you’ll find the energy contagious!

Parks are for jogging, walking, and hiking.

But what about plogging, plalking, or pliking?

Thats the combination of a common activity in a Cincinnati Park with picking up litter. In Sweden, plogging is the newest fitness trend that combines jogging with litter removal--derived from plocka upp, a Swedish word for picking up.

Its a trend you might want to try. Or you could join us for obLITTERators. We gather monthly in parks all over our city to remove trash. Learn all about this fun program and how you can get involved! #linkinbio

Did you know today is World Compliment Day? But around here, we dont need a special occasion to tell you how great you are! Do you remember our Compliment Wall at our 2019 Hats Off Luncheon? We thought today would be a perfect day to pay you all some compliments. . .

1️⃣ You are some kind of wonderful.
2️⃣ The world is better with you in it.
3️⃣ Colors seem brighter when youre around.
4️⃣ Our Cincinnati Parks are better because of your support!

Theres no reason that every day cant be compliment day, but lets celebrate in full force today. Take a compliment, and pass it on.
Our parks can be a place where art meets history. The Black Brigade is a perfect example. Dedicated in 2012 this monument, designed by sculptors John Hebenstreit and Carolyn Manto, features three life-size bronze figures, relief panels and the names of all 700 soldiers in the Black Brigade, who protected our riverfront during the Civil War. This artwork was the first piece of public art to be commissioned at Smale Riverfront Park. Learn more about the significance of this monument in Before the Banks #linkinbio --a series telling the history of the area we now now as The Banks.
February may almost be over, but we can honor Black history in Cincinnati and our Parks every month of the year. Thanks to a recent article in the Voice of Black Cincinnati, you can learn more about these sites--including some in our Parks. One of our most recent projects was a tribute to Cincinnati hero, Ezzard Charles. The bronze cast statue of the Cincinnati Cobra, the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, created by local artist John Hebenstreit, was unveiled in October of 2022 and his legacy is celebrated every fall at the West End commuitys Ezz Fest.

It’s Friday. And we’re seeing signs of spring everywhere we look. Get outside and soak it all in. Each tiny bloom is just one more reason why we love Cincinnati Parks.
It’s a beautiful day. Spring is in the air. And it’s National Chili day. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate than to deliver a surprise chili lunch to the Cincinnati Parks team at Krohn Conservatory. This team has been hard at work in creating their spring show, Blooms and Bunnies and we were excited to tell them how much we appreciate them with a special chili day party just for them!

Today is National Walking the Dog Day! So we hope you have plans to take your four-legged friend for a great walk today in your favorite Cincinnati Park. Who knew that a favorite moment for both you and your furry companion had its own special day?
We hike not just to explore and exercise, but also to learn.

We were joined by Cincinnati Parks Director Jason Barron, board members, and friends to hike through LaBoiteaux Woods in College Hill with Naturalist Lara Wardlow. Our steps took us into the Ravine to Freedom, which was likely a pathway for the Underground Railroad. We were bundled up on the brisk January day, but those who were traveling to freedom likely were not as they traversed the terrain in the winter when they could cross a frozen Ohio River. Abolitionist Zebulon Strong owned property near to the ravine and it’s been documented that his children would leave bags of supplies to help escaping slaves. The journey was made more dangerous by the southern sympathizers and although it was illegal to assist runaways, there was an active community of abolitionists in College Hill that provided supplies, shelter, and transportation.

You can learn more about this hike and the rich history of the Underground Railroad in Cincinnati #linkinbio with a link to a story from @fox19now can visit LaBoiteaux Woods Preserve to experience it for yourself.
Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. It was originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, but is now a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present. You can honor this day by taking a trip to Eden Park. Several memorial tree Groves have been planted in Eden Park near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Krohn Conservatory. The largest is Presidential Grove which has trees planted for US presidents.

This tree Grove was established at the first Arbor Day celebration in Cincinnati on April 27th, 1882 during the American Forestry Association’s first National Congress. It was estimated that over 25,000 people attended this inaugural event. On this memorable day trees were planted for all the US presidents who had served up to that point. Presidential descendants at the ceremony included members of George Washington’s family, Thomas Jefferson’s niece, and William Henry Harrison’s granddaughter
Its Random Acts of Kindness Day. This is a day to harness your kindness superpower and share some kindness to your community, another person, and yourself. We love this list from the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation #linkinbio and we hope youll check it out and spread kindness around like confetti today.

On their list of suggested activities today:

1️⃣ Pick up some litter. What a way to show kindness to your parks and your community.
2️⃣ Compliment with reckless abandon. Who doesnt want to hear about what a difference they make? (And a shoutout to the Cincinnati Parks team and our volunteers who make such a difference every day!)
3️⃣ Go for a long walk. Your parks are a perfect place for that and time in a beautiful setting is an instant mood booster to show yourself some kindness.

How will you show kindness today in your parks? Lets make today an extra special one here in Cincinnati Parks.

February is Black History Month, but its something that can be honored every day in Cincinnati Parks. Thank you to Cincinnati @enquirer for the great article showing all the sites we can visit to learn more, including several in our Parks. Just steps away from the @freedomcenter , you can visit the Black Brigade and Marian Spencer statues in the John G. and Phyllis W. Smale Riverfront Park. In the nearby West End, you can also learn more about hometown hero Ezzard Charles while visiting his bronze-cast statue in his namesake park. #Linkinbio to the Cincinnati Enquirer article to learn more about some of the sites all throughout our city.
Sure, Valentines Day is over. But we talk about how much we #lovecincyparks every day. The truth is, this is how we see our parks--through a pair of rose-colored, heart-shaped glasses. There are so many great projects, programs, and improvements coming to Cincinnati Parks all over the city. If you love Cincinnati parks like we do, keep following us and see how you can get involved.
Happy Valentine’s Day! Love is in the air today and we’re sharing some inspiration with some sweet stories of love that bloomed in our Cincinnati Parks. So many proposals and weddings take place in our Parks, from Mt. Storm’s Temple of Love, the Ault Park cascading fountain, and the view from Smale Park. If a proposal in Parks is part of your plan today, be sure to tell us all about it. We love our Parks and we love seeing plants, trees, flowers, and LOVE grow here!

You might not have February 13th marked on your calendar, but those of us in Parks and Recreation, can tell you that today is Galentines Day. We hope youre all enjoying brunch with waffles and flowers today, and maybe a fritatta or two as you celebrate friendship with your best gal pals.
Behind the scenes.

Thanks to the Sons and Daughters of Italy for an exciting update about the Capitoline Wolf statue. After the statue was reported missing, we teamed up with this group to replace the stolen she-wolf statue with a new one, which is being cast from the original mold in Florence, Italy.

Youre seeing pictures of the silicone jackets made of the twins, Romulus and Remus. From here, new plaster twins will be created as part of the re-creation of this statue.

We will be excited to welcome the Capitoline Wolf statue to Eden Park. Keep following us for more behind-the-scenes updates of this project. Follow the #linkinbio to learn more about this projects, including some background about the original statue.
When you love what you do, it shows!

And isn’t February a good time to talk about the things we love? For us, it’s all about a love of our Parks. If you’re following us here, you must love Cincinnati Parks, too. What’s your favorite park to explore and what makes you love it so much? Tell us in the comments! ⬇️
Maybe not everything can be an album cover, but the outdoor rink at Sawyer Point was filled with music, dancing, and fun yesterday—just as it should be. Keep following us and these talented skaters and you’ll want to lace up your skates, too.
Roller skating my be having a moment.

But it’s not having a resurgence.

Your social media feed may now be filled with roller skating routines, but the athletic art form has long been an important part of Black culture. As we recognize Black History Month, our current project to renovate the Sawyer Point outdoor roller rink, which is one of the largest outdoor rinks in the country, has more meaning. Roller rinks have long been a place for entertainment and socialization and a place for Black artists and musicians to perform and showcase their talents.

The love of roller skating is passed down through generations. Cincinnati is home to a thriving skating community of dance, group, quad, and jam skaters—some who have been skating their entire lives and some who have newly been welcomed into the activity. Thanks to Brandon, a member of the @reckless.sk8rs skate team, who said it better during a recent interview at the CRC rink in OTR. He’s part of the group @skatedowntowncincy, a resident-led initiative to raise awareness and resources for public skating spaces and programs in Cincinnati’s urban core.

This month, we’ll be highlighting some of the skaters involved in this project and putting Cincinnati on the map as a skating destination. Keep following us to meet these talented skaters and to see how you can get involved in this project.

Congratulations to all of our Friluftsliv Winter Hiking Challenge hikers for an incredible six weeks of hiking in Cincinnati Parks. A special congratulations to our Challenge Winner, @shastapop123 -- This was her third year participating in our challenge, and we have had such a great time hiking with her and her friends! Shes won the Cincinnati Parks Foundation winter survival kit, filled with all kinds of great treats!

Shastas shared that shes loved exploring different parks and having a chance to take it all in while following the leader. What was your favorite part of our challenge? Tell us in the comments below!
Hey @odnrforestry -- you inspired us! We loved your forest-inspired haiku for #NationalHaikuWritingMonth, so we wrote some to celebrate Cincinnati Parks.

If you #LoveCincyParks like we do, join us in writing a haiku of your own. Heres how to do it--we wrote a simple haiku to explain how.

Five syllables first
Seven more syllables next
Five syllables last

For step-by-step instructions:
1. Each haiku has 3 lines.
2. There are 5 syllables in the first line.
3. There are 7 syllables in the second line.
4. There are 5 syllables in the third line
5. The lines dont rhyme.

Lets see what you come up with! Put your haiku ode to Cincy Parks in the comments below or post your own and tag us @cincyparksfoundation so we can see. Scroll through the ones that our team wrote for a bit of inspo. @haika575 -- why dont you give it a try?

Its Groundhog Day. No matter what the groundhog sees, spring is on the way. We consider this day a signal of the season opener to the Cincinnati Parks season. Weve had fun in our parks all winter long, but were excited for all that is to come this spring in Cincinnati Parks.

We dont know about you, but today we needed a burst of color! Theres no better place to find a breath of fresh air and a moment of zen than in a Cincinnati Park. We love our parks all seasons of the year--but sometimes, we all need a reminder that spring is on the way.
Snow or no?

Depending on where you live, youll either carry a shovel or an umbrella today. Weve loved seeing delightful snow people popping up all over Cincinnati Parks this week, like this friend we saw at Owls Nest Park. Are you hoping for more snow or do you have an eye toward spring?
To welcome Cincinnati Parks Foundation’s five new members of its Board of Directors, we took a bus tour to visit parks all over our city. We went from east to west and back again. Thanks to Director of Cincinnati Parks, Jason Barron and team for a great tour. We’re excited for another year working together to improve our Parks and our City.

Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year. Its the Year of the Rabbit. The luckiest animal of the Zodiac, those born under the rabbit sign are said to be creative, thoughtful, and empathetic. Of course, these cotton-tailed friends can be found all over Cincinnati Parks--at the Krohn Conservatory for their spring show, Blooms and Bunnies, which starts on February 1. Its National Squirrel Day! Did you know that there are three types of squirrels in Cincinnati? The eastern grey squirrel, the fox squirrel, and the southern flying squirrel can all be found scurrying around our parks and greenspaces.
Are you having any fun? Then it’s about time you join us for a Friluftsliv Winter Hike. It’s our last week and our last park of this fun challenge. We’re headed to the John G. and Phyllis W. Smale Riverfront Park—but you know that already, didn’t you?

Come play with us this Saturday at 10am for our stroller-friendly, accessible, docent-led hike, which will be guided by the one and only Morgan Rigaud. 💚 For those wanting to get in their steps and continue the fun, you’ll have the option of walking all the way to Friendship Park. That means you’ll hike through Smale, Sawyer Point, and Friendship—3 parks for the price of one. (And the price? Free! Today and everyday!)

Do you want more hikes together? Let us know! We’re always up for a hike in a Cincinnati Park and it’s so much better when we’re together.

If youve been roller skating in Sawyer Point or hiking in Avon Woods with us, you probably already know Morgan Rigaud. If not, youre going to want to meet her.

Morgan runs Skate Downtown Cincy, a resident-led initiative to raise awareness and resources for public skating spaces and programs in Cincinnatis urban core. Her goal is to get all of you in our parks and on skates. She leads a group of volunteers, all skaters themselves, who are working to revitalize the Sawyer Point Rink, making it safe, welcoming, and fun. Her group organizes multicultural, multigenerational skating events, with everything from skating instruction to skaters yoga to skating showcases where spectators are in awe of our local skating teams amazing talent and athleticism. Think of it like ballet---but on wheels!

Whether you want to skate or just watch, youll want to keep following us and @skatedowntowncincy to see all that is in store for Sawyer Point.
Were thrilled to host another season of be.well, fitness and wellness classes for children with disabilities through Cincinnati Childrens Occupational and Physical therapy departments. This Saturday, our be.well gathered at Avon Woods for the first class in their session, leading to increased flexibility and strength, as well as social connections and friendships. They may find fitness and confidence in our parks, and theyll carry these with them everywhere.
Thank you to the nearly 300 volunteers who observed a Day of Service in Cincinnati Parks on Monday and over the weekend. They got their hands dirty, removing invasive species, mulching playgrounds, removing litter, and planting trees. If you missed the opportunity to volunteer, dont worry! We’re gearing up for the last week of our Friluftsliv Winter Hiking Challenge and boy do we have some fun planned for all of you. Can you guess where we are hiking? Tell us in the comments—we’re expecting lots of correct guesses! Remember to mark your calendars for our docent-led group hike with the fabulous Morgan Rigaud on Saturday at 10am. This is a stroller-friendly, accessible hike so plan to join us!

We’d love to have you jump in and do the challenge at your own pace! DM us for details!
