Meet the 2024 #CincyBarks Winner

Rhubarb – the Rescue Mutt Who Stole Cincinnati’s Heart

Cincinnati Parks are full of incredible stories and this year’s #CincyBarks competition introduced us to one of the most heartwarming yet. Meet Rhubarb, the lovable rescue mutt who won the title of Cincinnati Parks‘ unofficial canine mascot for 2024. Her journey from a tiny, sick puppy to a trail-loving, energetic companion is nothing short of inspiring.

A Surprise Entry Turned to Victory

Rhubarb’s owners, Beth and Linda, are avid Cincinnati Parks visitors and enjoy taking long walks with their pup. It was Beth’s niece who first suggested entering Rhubarb into the contest.
We love the parks and we walk a lot with Rhubarb. My niece saw the contest and suggested we enter her. The rest is history,” Beth shared.

What Kind of Dog is Rhubarb?

Rhubarb is a unique mix, as confirmed by a DNA test. She is part American Staffordshire Terrier and part Bulldog—traits that give her both strength and boundless energy.
She is 1.5 years old and has a lot of energy,” Beth said with a laugh. “Early on, we started walking on the trails with her. She’s playful, affectionate, and loves to cuddle after a long walk.
Not only is she affectionate, but Rhubarb is also a social butterfly. She loves people, other dogs, and playing fetch—one of her favorite activities.

From Abandoned Puppy to Beloved Companion

Rhubarb’s origin story is nothing short of miraculous.
My niece found her in a box when she was just three weeks old, shivering and weak,” Beth recalled. “We rushed her to a pet clinic, where they treated her for Parvo—a life-threatening condition.”
Beth and Linda had just recently lost their 16-year-old pit bull, and while they initially took Rhubarb in to nurse her back to health, they quickly fell in love.
She was so strong and determined to live. We couldn’t let her go.”

Favorite Cincinnati Parks for an Adventurous Pup

For Rhubarb, parks aren’t just places to visit—they’re essential to her daily life. Beth and Linda love taking her on trail walks, and their top parks include Mt. Airy Forest and Fairview Park.
We love hiking the trails. It gives her great exercise, and she loves exploring all the scents,” Beth shared. “She’s up for a walk in any season, but I personally prefer fall and winter.”

A Celebration Fit for a Champion

Winning the #CincyBarks title was a moment of pure joy for Rhubarb’s family.
We were beyond excited. We popped open a bottle of champagne and toasted to her! It was amazing to celebrate her journey with friends and family,” Beth said.

The Singing Dog with a Love for Baking

Rhubarb has a few quirks that make her even more lovable.
She doesn’t bark—she sings,” Beth revealed with a laugh. “Sometimes she sounds like a horse or even a pig! If she wants attention, she’ll sing until you give it to her.”
She’s also a fan of baking days. Whenever Beth bakes pies, Rhubarb waits patiently for a piece of pie dough.

A Perfect Ambassador for Cincinnati Parks

Rhubarb’s story is one of resilience, love and an undeniable zest for life. From a fragile puppy fighting for survival to a vibrant, affectionate companion, she has brought endless joy to Beth and Linda. Whether she’s running through the trails, making new friends, or singing for attention, Rhubarb embodies the spirit of companionship and devotion.
If you see Rhubarb out on the trails, be sure to say hello to Cincinnati’s newest four-legged ambassador.
Congratulations, Rhubarb!
