Harry Kangis and His Lasting Impact on Cincinnati Parks Foundation

For nearly a decade, Harry Kangis has been an integral force behind the Cincinnati Parks Foundation (CPF), shaping its strategy, strengthening its governance and ensuring its long-term success. While 2024 marks the conclusion of his official tenure on the Board of Directors, his influence will be felt for years to come. And true to his deep passion for conservation, Harry remains committed to supporting CPF in new and meaningful ways.

A Deep-Rooted Connection to Cincinnati Parks

A longtime Cincinnati resident, Harry and his wife, Dr. Julia Hawgood, have lived on the edge of Ault Park for over 40 years. In fact, they got married in the park—making it not just a scenic backdrop but a part of their love story. With a career spanning strategic consulting, marketing leadership at Procter & Gamble and dedicated conservation work, Harry brought a wealth of expertise and an unwavering commitment to CPF’s mission.

A Strategic Mindset with a Conservation Heart

What inspired you to join the CPF Board? It was a natural fit. A fellow Board member recognized my strategic planning expertise and nonprofit governance experience, particularly from my leadership roles with The Nature Conservancy. As an avid conservationist and long-term neighbor to Ault Park, I was happy to accept the nomination.

Over the years, his perspective evolved. Having served on nonprofit boards since the 1970s, he saw the need for stronger governance structures, greater board accountability, and a shift in mindset. “Board members are there to help the staff, not the other way around. Most of the real work happens in committees. Being on a board is real work, not just another merit badge for your resume,he explains.

Transformational Leadership and Tangible Achievements

During his nine years on the CPF Executive Committee, Harry played a pivotal role in key achievements:

  • Strengthening Independence: He helped CPF become fully independent from the Cincinnati Park Board while implementing best-in-class nonprofit governance practices.
  • Advocating for Parks Funding & Leadership: Harry represented CPF in a special community group advocating for the Parks Levy and successfully lobbied city leadership to ensure stability and collaboration with the Parks Department.
  • Laying the Foundation for the Future: He formalized key organizational processes, including annual strategic planning, board officer rotations and performance reviews. His One Page Strategic Plan® process became a staple in CPF’s long-term planning efforts.
  • Personal Investment in Ault Park: Harry and his wife have been consistent CPF donors, most notably making a major anchor donation for the upcoming Ault Park Cascade Fountain, Plaza and Pavilion renovation—a project especially close to their hearts.

A Lasting Impact and Continued Commitment
